This was our first trip. Nebraska was cold and vast. We had been told it was the heartland of America, which seemed like a good place to start.
The idea was to undo our working process, so we could better connect to the people we met and their stories.
It was about allowing the story to unfold by itself without having too much planning in place, other than the idea that we would talk to people and make pieces in the moment, based on the stories told.
I was with the writer, Sasha Markova. She carried her blank t-shirts and pen; I took my bag of fabric, needle and thread.
